Disrupting Common Culture

Living Hope Centers hosted the Silver Ring Thing at Blueridge High School on April 1st.  We did this to offer a free event for students and parents to learn why and how to make and keep a commitment to sexual purity.  The why is fairly simple:  it is God's will, it is emotionally and spiritually damaging to us and others when we don't and, we must mention, the 30+ sexually transmitted diseases you will avoid by obedience to God's will.

1 Thessalonians 4:3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.

The how is not quite as simple.  However, the Silver Ring Thing team pointed out that, without faith in God and obedience to His commands, it is impossible to go against today's common culture.  The group of 13 young adults aged 18-25 shared how God has helped them keep their commitment to purity.  One young man talked about putting on his silver ring when he was 13 years old.  He is now 25 and lived through junior high, high school and college without sacrificing his virginity, his integrity or his future.  He shared the Gospel with a passion that made my heart sing.

After he shared, 42 students prayed and asked Jesus to be their Lord and Savior.  What's more, 108 students put on a silver ring to signal their commitment to purity.  There were also 15 parents or leaders who put on a silver ring to commit to pray for their child, their child's future spouse, a student in their group or simply as a reminder for them to also be sexually pure.  Do you think teens are the only ones tempted?  Addiction to porn, affairs and other sexual immorality is, tragically, as common in the church as it is in "the world".

Here is a story that happened at the event in Lakeside…
From Emily: “While giving out scholarships, I met a mom and a son who both wanted rings. Usually I ask them to talk with me separately for comfortability’s sake, but I hardly got a question out before the son told me why he felt strongly about putting on a ring. I watched him confess to his mom some of the things he had gotten into because of life circumstances, and immediately the mom confessed some sin to her son. “Wow, I never knew that” blurted the son. I saw this moment of vulnerability and was at a loss for words. So mom and son put on rings together tonight, but went home with a completely different relationship than they entered the venue with. That’s something to celebrate!”

Living Hope Centers sponsored this event as part of our commitment to youth development, disease and pregnancy prevention and, most of all, our passion to share the truth of Jesus with others.   After all, our mission is to help men and women make choices that removes obstacles, build strong families and honor life.  This event certainly helped teens and adults remove the obstacle of sexual immorality, build stronger family bonds and honor every life in our community.

Thank you for helping us change the world and disrupt the common culture.
